Requirements
The VFC Program requires providers to:
- Comply with recommendations from the Advisory Committee for Immunization Practices (ACIP) about immunization schedules, dosages, and contraindications,
- Offer all age-appropriate vaccines,
- Give the patient or the parent the most current version of the Vaccine Information Statement (VIS)
- Record information about each immunization, including version date on the VIS, vaccine given, lot number, and injection site, and date the vaccine was given and the name of the person who gave it. This information must be kept on file for 3 years.
- Give VFC vaccine only to children who are eligible. Screen patients for VFC eligibility and document their eligibility status at every immunization visit. This information must be kept on file for 3 years.
Fees
VFC providers are allowed to charge patients a vaccine administration fee, except for Medi-Cal patients. Providers may bill Medi-Cal for the administration fee. The fee can be any amount up to the maximum stated in the VFC Provider Enrollment Agreement. But, VFC providers are not allowed to deny a VFC-eligible patient an immunization just because they or their parent is not able to pay the administration fee. In those situations, you must waive the administration fee, but other office visit fees may still be charged.
