Reporting & Return of Nonviable Vaccines

Providers participating in any of California’s vaccination programs agree to report and return nonviable vaccine in compliance with California VFC Program requirements.

Vaccine Coordinators must report all publicly sourced spoiled, expired, or wasted vaccines on the Waste report form at myCAvax; select the “Return Shipping Method” to receive a return label by mail or email for all eligible returns. Return vaccines within 30 days to prevent expiration of return label.

Eligible Returns by Funding Source

Dispose of wasted vaccines (including vials that have been opened or punctured) following practice protocols. For spoiled and expired vaccines, see guidance below.

  • BAP COVID-19, SGF Flu, LHD 317, VFA, and VFC Programs: Return vaccines to McKesson.
  • Mpox Program: Outbreak Jynneos vaccines are not eligible for return; dispose of as medical waste following practice protocols.
  • Privately purchased vaccines: Escalate returns to manufacturer. (For COVID-19 vaccines, see EZIZ’s manufacturer contact info.)

Return Labels

Request return labels for eligible spoiled and expired vaccines at myCAvax.

By email: UPS return labels are emailed to the Primary Vaccine Coordinator from UPS Quantum View [mail to: pkginfo@ups.com] and with subject line “UPS Label Delivery.” Ensure this email address is not blocked by email spam filters. Emails should arrive within one business day of these processing dates:

  • LHD 317/VFA/VFC returns processed daily from Monday through Friday
  • SGF Flu returns processed weekly on Tuesdays and Fridays around 12pm-2pm
  • BAP COVID-19 returns processed weekly on Wednesdays around 12-2pm

By standard mail: Return labels are enclosed in an envelope addressed to the practice name and address, marked to the attention of the VFC Vaccine Contact, and stamped with “Return Label for Expired Vaccines” printed in a large red font. Return labels should arrive within 3-5 business days. If you do not receive your return label from McKesson within 7 days, contact the Provider Call Center (or VFC Program for VFC vaccines) for assistance.

Packaging Vaccines for Return

Return nonviable vaccines within 30 days to prevent expiration of return label. Key points:

  • Clearly label the outside of the shipping container “Non-viable Vaccine Enclosed” and return to this address:
MCKESSON SPECIALTY CAR VACCINE: VFC -OBV, 8745 FOREST HILL IRENE, SUITE 105, OLIVE BRANCH, MS 38654
  • Return the exact vaccine products and quantities as reported at myCAvax for the waste event. (Submit a new report for return of additional vaccine doses or products.)
  • For multiple return labels, package all vaccines together with one return label posted on the outside of the shipping container and all other labels inserted inside the shipment with vaccines. Return labels do not include any identifying details to match with a return waste event.
  • To avoid UPS pickup fees, drop off at a UPS location or deliver to your UPS driver with other outbound shipments.
